You've likely seen the bumper sticker "I'd rather be fishing" (or maybe you have one on your own car), well Captain John Benton embodies that sentiment. Since age five when his Dad first took him down to a farm pond in Charlotte one Sunday afternoon for his first time fishing, he's been hooked. In fact, Cpt. John can still recall the feel of that first Zebco rod/reel combo he'd been given for his birthday & that fateful trip to the G&S Grocery on the way to the pond to pick up night crawlers.
"As we came around the bend in the old country road, the car began to slow down, & my dad said 'here we are son, this is it,' Capt. John remembers. We drove down the dirt drive & I could see the pond immediately, it was then, before I even cast my first line ever; that I knew my life was about to be forever changed. Bream and a few bass were the catch that day. Whether it's bream on the banks of a pond, or fishing for 30lb Redfish at the Charleston jetties; I still love it just the way I did 33 years ago..."
And that's the attitude Captain John has each time he takes a group in-shore fishing aroud Charleston. With years of experience on these shores, he swiftly navigates the waters to decipher the best areas to fish and brings that same five-year-old enthusiasm paired with a sportsman's professionalism to the water.
